Spring Denim – Eye on Fashion

Recently a little birdy whispered a secret into my ear, “low rise denim, Britney Spears style, is trending this spring.” I froze, anguished with images of plumber butts and G-strings. People are barely able to let go of their skinny jeans, now this? (Yes, that’s right – skinny jeans are no more). Will people start subjecting themselves to a bikini wax to slip into a pair of jeans again? Bushes came back during covid, the 70’s fashion was fierce, this can’t be possible!

So, I’d like to clarify the truth and reconcile the situation.

The truth is trends discriminate. Trends are not meant for ‘everybody’ and often create unshapely silhouettes. Majority of my clients, and consumers at large, are walking away from trends a.k.a. fast fashion. As a collective, we’re more aware of fast fashion’s damaging effects on the world at large.

But denim trends change as often as social media influencers change brand promotions, so here’s what’s popular this spring.

  • Slouchy Denim (binary replacement for boyfriend/girlfriend denim).
  • Straight Leg this style looks good on most people and is accessible in different rises. (tip: flared or bootcut denim can be tailored straight).
  • Dark denim (wash in cold and be conscious of dye bleeding, especially on light-coloured suede).
  • Carrot Tapered
    (the revised “mom” jean).
  • Low-rise relaxed (please try
    sitting before purchase).

Remember:

Never invest in a premium price when trying out a new trend.

Three of the most common rises in jeans are high, mid, and low. High-rise jeans will draw attention to your midsection but also elongate your legs.

Low-rise denim is great for long legs, but if worn too tightly, a muffin top may be an issue. Midrise is usually the safest bet. They should sit just below your belly button.  Disclaimer: Motherhood, health concerns, physical uniqueness, aesthetic preference are fair reasons to wear whatever style you’re most comfortable in.

Tips & Tricks

  • Slight bootcut or flared denim will help balance out hips and elongate legs.
  • (Pocket detail on the bum is important! Large pocket details continuing under bum crease create a “flattened or pancake” look).
  • Small pocket details create a fuller bottom.
  • Don’t lose yourself in a slouchy pair of jeans and a slouchy top combo. Pair slouchy bottoms with tailored or fitted tops.
  • Read fabric content. Denim with a high percentage of lycra (spandex) will have less bounce back over time. Ideally, denim will mould to the shape of your body and rarely need to be washed.
  • Invest in premium denim. Buy less, wear longer. These should outlive you.
  • Fabric care is important. Wash inside out. Keep water cool. Never tumble dry.
  • Do they smell bad? Insert them into a plastic bag and freeze them for 6-8 hours.
  • Over the style but love the fit? Cut them into denim shorts.
