Be sure to pucker up on July 6, dear Adamo Nest readers, as it’s National Kissing Day!
This unofficial holiday was designed to encourage people to not only participate as much as possible, but also to further an appreciation for the simple act of meaningful kissing – not just as a prelude to intense sex, and not just as strangers who meet for the first time and share a peck on the cheek. The exact origins of this unofficial holiday are unclear, but the consensus is that it was first recognized in England in the year 2000, then subsequently adopted by several other nations.
Kissing itself is a basic, but very powerful act. Emotionally, there may or may not be love involved between two parties who kiss (there’s usually at least some level of affection), but science tells us that kissing definitely promotes a lot of genuine physiological activity. Kissing someone on the mouth causes your brain to release a cavalcade of pleasurable chemicals that include oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin, which synergistically promote feelings of euphoria.
Other physiological actions include a lowering of the stress hormone cortisol, along with the dilation of your blood vessels, which in turn reduces blood pressure.
Psychologically, kissing your partner may be even more stimulating than sexual intercourse. Researchers say a kiss produces feelings of monogamy, security, and of being needed and valued. Oxytocin, for instance, has been identified as promoting “pair bonding” and sensations of emotional attachment.
So if you have a willing partner, we encourage you to kiss for bliss in the 416 on the 6th!
