Summer is approaching, and lockdown measures or otherwise, you need to make sure all of your condo spaces – both in and out – are optimized to their full potential.
The condo balcony is often an afterthought when it comes to design, which is why it’s important to be as creative and efficient with that space as you would any other you call your own. With that in mind, it’s important to follow three basic principles.
RECLAIM
Take back that space. It doesn’t have to be filled with foldable, cheap furniture and disposable-style accoutrements. Nor does it have to fit “one” purpose or style.
Break it up. Add screens to provide privacy in the urban jungle. Pre-built, or DIY creations, screens can also be used to set the backdrop for your balcony.
MAKE IT A DESTINATION
- Light Dining Area: Soft seating and benches provide function and form, making it easy for you and/or your guests (when those are allowed!) to comfortably eat wherever there’s a seat. Perfect for a sunrise breakfast, this space is designed for the early bird on the go.
- Full-Sun Area: Picture comfortable seating, air circulation and a side table to hold your cold drinks on a hot day. Sit back, relax and enjoy the weather. This space is designed for the full-day sunbather.
- Workout Area: Mirrors and an outdoor speaker are ideal for any workout area, but you have to consider the space you have available. Designed for those who make the most of what they have, you need to make sure you have enough room to move around (at least 200 sq. ft.).
- Lounge Area: A sectional or like-minded soft-seating option is the key to creating a cozy zone. Looking for a retreat or a place to entertain close friends and family? This is the destination for you.
MAINTENANCE
Will it last? First, and most importantly: Balcony furniture has to be weighted, otherwise it can shift or get blown off of the balcony.
If storage is a problem and would like the option to leave everything outside all year long, furniture covers extend the lifespan of any balcony investment.
Plus, all balcony items need to be able to withstand the elements, otherwise you’ll be painting every season, or, worse, replacing.
OFTEN OVERLOOKED? FLOORING!
Concrete floors stain doesn’t weather well, and it doesn’t provide the warmth and vibrance you likely expect from each and every space in, or outside of your condo.
I recommend composite flooring. It comes in various colours, it’s durable and long-lasting. It’s worth the investment to make sure your condo balcony stands out, and it can be easily installed.
